Student Honor Pledge Reinforces Academic
Honesty at Daniel Webster College

One of the most important, proactive components of academic honesty is a student honor pledge. Many colleges and universities have incorporated a student honor pledge into their campus culture of academic integrity. Experts who study academic dishonesty in higher education encourage the use of a student honor pledge, and feel that it can be an effective deterrent to cheating.

Daniel Webster College believes that all students have the right to learn in an academic community that insures fair competition, and respects truth and honesty. Academic dishonesty is not tolerated at Daniel Webster College. The Student Honor Pledge is intended to support the community of fairness, respect and responsibility in the pursuit of academic enterprise.

The Student Honor Pledge reads as follows:

I pledge on my honor, as a student at Daniel Webster College,
that I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid on assignments and examinations.

The Academic Integrity Statement reinforces the DWC community’s commitment to academic and personal integrity:

I agree to uphold the principles of honor set forth by
the Daniel Webster College community
and to defend these principles against abuse and misuse.

The Daniel Webster College Student Honor Pledge is prominently displayed in all DWC classrooms and labs. All incoming freshmen and returning upperclassmen will be asked to read and sign the pledge when they register for classes each semester. The signed honor pledge will then be filed with students academic records. During the Fall Convocation, students will stand and recite the Pledge in unison. A student member of the Student Honor Pledge Committee will lead the Pledge recitation.

Each faculty member will indicate when and where the Pledge or the Academic Integrity Statement is required on assignments, papers, and exams. Students who are unwilling to sign the Pledge must work with faculty to find a suitable alternative to the Pledge that provides compliance to the Daniel Webster College policy and expectations regarding academic honesty.
