Daniel Webster College – Anne Bridge Baddour Library
Acceptable Use of the Media Lab

Working Document, February 2006

The Media Lab in the Anne Bridge Baddour Library is provided as an academic support resource to enhance student, faculty, and staff projects and presentations. It is available to current members of the DWC community. Media Lab equipment and resources cannot be used for personal and/or commercial profit.  The popularity of the limited resources of the Media Lab necessitates the formulation of acceptable use policies and procedures:

§         Academic projects always take precedence over personal projects.

§         All projects will be terminated fifteen (15) minutes prior to Library closing for shut down of the Media Lab computers.

§         You can only use one machine at a time unless authorized by the Educational Technologist.

§         You must be present at all times during processing of a media project. Media Lab computers cannot be “locked” nor can signs be attached to any media equipment indicating that a project is in process and the equipment cannot be used.

§         Users, regardless of advice from others, or their own technical knowledge are not allowed to plug, unplug, move, remove, alter, or change any hardware (computer physical parts), cables, or other technological items except in a fire emergency.

§         For licensing considerations and machine maintenance, do not install any software or change any system settings.

§         Personal projects that require lengthy (longer than thirty minutes) processing time that will tie-up a Media Lab workstation should be done on Fridays, from 2 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.  However, an academic project will take precedence even during this time.

§         To ensure access when needed, it is recommended that those who have media projects sign up to reserve time to work on these projects in the Media Lab.

§         The Media Lab computers are regularly cleaned of student projects over four weeks old. If you have a project that needs to stay on a computer longer than four weeks, please contact the Educational Technologist. The Media Lab does not accept responsibility for your project data.

§         Copying of commercial programs, including television programs, is not permitted under international copyright law without the written permission of the copyright holder. This includes video, audio, and print media. Lab customers are liable for the use of copyrighted material within their projects. Illegal copying of media programs and software will result in loss of Media Lab privileges.

§         Library Staff is the final authority in the interpretation and determination of acceptable use of the Media Lab.

§         Violation of these policies may result in loss of Media Lab privileges.
