Scope: Ishmael Reed is an Afro-American writer whose works focus on the social condition of Black Americans. He is considered a satirical novelist in that his works attack American institutions and their attitudes. Reed interweaves jazz music throughout his works. His novel
Mumbo Jumbo and his poetry collection entitled Conjure were both nominated for National Book Awards. Reed’s writing has broadened the scope of Afro-American literature.
