| Scope: Carl Sandburg began his literary career as a newspaper writer and motion picture editor. He was the recipient of numerous awards including a Pulitzer Prize in history in 1939 for his book Abraham Lincoln: The War Years. In 1953 he received the Poetry Society of America guild medal . He was distinguished in the fields of poetry, history, biography, fiction, and music.
