Josh Rushing as a US Marine
A former US Marine captain with 15 years
of service, Rushing was a spokesperson at Central Command in
Doha, Qatar, during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The independent
film, Control Room, captured his efforts to communicate
the American message on Al Jazeera. The film became a critical
hit after release at the Sundance Film Festival.
The face of Al Jazeera in America
Since resigning his commission and
becoming the face of Al Jazeera in America, Rushing's change
of career has come at a price: His loyalty to his nation,
once unquestioned as a Marine officer, is assaulted on
Internet blogs, and includes death threats and hate mail.
Regardless, his mission remains the
same, as he unflinchingly believes the US is in a protracted
world war partially fueled by misperception and
misunderstanding on both sides of the cultural divide - and
Al Jazeera bridges this informational fracture.
Rushing is recognized for expressing
ideas important for America without fear of criticism,
engaging audiences at universities and civic groups. He is
praised for his ability to connect with his audience and
inspire thought and debate that last long after the
auditorium empties.
Even while challenging Pentagon
assumptions and policies, Rushing continues to remain
passionately engaged with the military, recently speaking to
conferences of generals and admirals. He is a regular speak
at West Point, the National Defense University, and the
Defense Information School.
Rushing's work with Al Jazeera
International is groundbreaking; as the first international
news network in English to broadcast from outside the West,
Al Jazeera International has three dozen broadcast centers
circling the globe - including Washington, London, Doha, and
Kuala Lumpur - where news follows the day. A portion of each
day, each broadcast center hosts news and current affairs
programming with complete, independent editorial control
from other broadcast centers, giving viewers a world of
perspectives of the day's events. The three dozen bureaus,
combined with the resources of Al Jazeera Arabic make the
two the world's largest newsgathering operation.
Rushing's first book, Mission Al
Jazeera: Build a Bridge, Seek the Truth, Change the World,
is his personal story that bridges a unique
behind-the-scenes look at how the invasion of Iraq was sold
at Central Command the Al Jazeera network.
Having appeared on every major news
network, Rushing was featured on the cover of Fast
Company magazine, inside the pages of GQ
magazine, and on "The Today Show," "Anderson Cooper 360,"
and "The O'Reilly Factor."
