Dr. Laurie L. Gordy named division chair

at Daniel Webster College

January 5, 2005 (Nashua, NH) – Dr. Laurie L. Gordy, Nashua, has been named chairperson of the division of social sciences and humanities.

An associate professor of social science and humanities at Daniel Webster College since 2002, Dr. Gordy earned both her master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. At Daniel Webster College, she teaches both social science and non-social science students and has been the coordinator for the Social Science major. She teaches a variety of sociology courses, including Race and Ethnic Relations and Sociology of Gender.

Said Dr. Michael Fishbein, vice president of academic affairs at Daniel Webster, "Dr. Gordy is a thoughtful and engaging colleague and I believe she will ably represent the disciplines of her division and take a College-wide perspective on crucial issues."

Professor Gordy presented two papers at national conferences during the past six months related to her research on images of racial minority female athletes in sports magazines. In May 2004, she presented her paper, "Race and the Personae of Female Athletes" at the Cultural Studies Association at Northeastern University, Boston, Mass. In November 2004, she presented her paper, "Females of Color in Sports Illustrated for Women" at the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport in Tucson, Ariz.

She is a member of the American Sociological Association and Sociologists for Women and Society and a member of New England Campus Compact.

A native of Salisbury, Md., Gordy came to Daniel Webster College after eight years as a faculty member at University of South Carolina Spartanburg .
