Daniel Webster College Announces New Aviation Chair

September 3, 2003 - Daniel Webster College (DWC) President Hannah M. McCarthy announced the appointment of Phillip J. Poynor, J.D. as associate professor of aviation and chair of the college's aviation division.

Poynor comes to DWC following 14 years as a member of the Farmingdale State University of New York faculty. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Texas Tech University, a master's in business administration from DePaul University, and a juris doctorate from New York's St. John's University.

Poynor is a rated airline transport pilot and a gold seal and master certified flight.  From 1970-1981 he worked in flight crew administration for TWA.  He serves on the board of the National Association of Flight Instructors and was previously the chair of the National Air Transportation Association's flight training committee.  Poynor recently had his designation as a Master CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) renewed by the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI), his professional aviation education organization. He is one of only three New Hampshire educators with this designation.

Poynor is a seasoned educator and aviator and last year published the textbook Air Carrier Operations, Iowa State Press. Additionally, he was the vice president, general manager and co-owner of Nassau Flyers, a large, independent flight school on Long Island. Nassau Flyers has been recognized for its excellent reputation and customer service, and in 1998, Poyner was the recipient of the National Air Transportation Association's "Excellence in Pilot Training Award" for his work at Nassau Flyers.

At DWC Poynor will teach air carrier operations as well as other aviation courses. He will also be engaged in on-going curriculum review of the flight program, the development of a professional advisory board for aviation, and advise the college's vice president of academic affairs on aviation affairs.
